Market Participants Recognise Fortinet, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:FTNT) Earnings Pushing Shares 32% Higher
The Fortinet, Inc. (NASDAQ:FTNT) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 32%. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 28%.
After such a large jump in price, Fortinet's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 43.8x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 18x and even P/E's below 10x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
Recent times have been pleasing for Fortinet as its earnings have risen in spite of the market's earnings going into reverse. It seems that many are expecting the company to continue defying the broader market adversity, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Fortinet would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 26% gain to the company's bottom line. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 171% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 12% per annum during the coming three years according to the analysts following the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 10% per year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
With this information, we can see why Fortinet is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Fortinet's P/E
The strong share price surge has got Fortinet's P/E rushing to great heights as well. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
As we suspected, our examination of Fortinet's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
