Lacklustre Performance Is Driving EverCommerce Inc.'s (NASDAQ:EVCM) 25% Price Drop

EverCommerce Inc. (NASDAQ:EVCM) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 25% share price drop in the last month. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 29% in that time.

Following the heavy fall in price, EverCommerce may be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.2x, since almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 4.9x and even P/S higher than 11x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does EverCommerce's Recent Performance Look Like?

EverCommerce's revenue growth of late has been pretty similar to most other companies. It might be that many expect the mediocre revenue performance to degrade, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like EverCommerce's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 22% last year. Revenue has also lifted 21% in aggregate from three years ago, mostly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has actually done a good job of growing revenue over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 15% during the coming year according to the eight analysts following the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 21% growth, that's a disappointing outcome.

With this information, we are not surprised that EverCommerce is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

The Key Takeaway

Shares in EverCommerce have plummeted and its P/S has followed suit. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of EverCommerce's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue is contributing to its low P/S. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, EverCommerce's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
