Little Excitement Around 8x8, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:EGHT) Revenues As Shares Take 26% Pounding

Unfortunately for some shareholders, the 8x8, Inc. (NASDAQ:EGHT) share price has dived 26% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 25% share price drop.

Since its price has dipped substantially, 8x8's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Software industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 4.6x and even P/S above 10x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does 8x8's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, 8x8's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For 8x8?

8x8's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 2.2%. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 19% in total. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the nine analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 0.5% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 19%, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that 8x8's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

What Does 8x8's P/S Mean For Investors?

8x8's P/S looks about as weak as its stock price lately. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of 8x8's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with 8x8, and understanding should be part of your investment process.
