We're Not Worried About Duck Creek Technologies' (NASDAQ:DCT) Cash Burn
There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.
So, the natural question for Duck Creek Technologies (NASDAQ:DCT) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). First, we'll determine its cash runway by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves.

Does Duck Creek Technologies Have A Long Cash Runway?
You can calculate a company's cash runway by dividing the amount of cash it has by the rate at which it is spending that cash. As at May 2021, Duck Creek Technologies had cash of US$372m and no debt. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through US$1.6m. So it had a very long cash runway of many years from May 2021. While this is only one measure of its cash burn situation, it certainly gives us the impression that holders have nothing to worry about. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.
Is Duck Creek Technologies' Revenue Growing?
We're hesitant to extrapolate on the recent trend to assess its cash burn, because Duck Creek Technologies actually had positive free cash flow last year, so operating revenue growth is probably our best bet to measure, right now. It's nice to see that operating revenue was up 23% in the last year. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.
How Easily Can Duck Creek Technologies Raise Cash?
Notwithstanding Duck Creek Technologies' revenue growth, it is still important to consider how it could raise more money, if it needs to. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.
Duck Creek Technologies' cash burn of US$1.6m is about 0.03% of its US$5.3b market capitalisation. That means it could easily issue a few shares to fund more growth, and might well be in a position to borrow cheaply.
So, Should We Worry About Duck Creek Technologies' Cash Burn?
As you can probably tell by now, we're not too worried about Duck Creek Technologies' cash burn. In particular, we think its cash runway stands out as evidence that the company is well on top of its spending. Its revenue growth wasn't quite as good, but was still rather encouraging! Taking all the factors in this report into account, we're not at all worried about its cash burn, as the business appears well capitalized to spend as needs be. On another note, Duck Creek Technologies has 2 warning signs (and 1 which shouldn't be ignored) we think you should know about.
