Market Might Still Lack Some Conviction On Dave Inc. (NASDAQ:DAVE) Even After 27% Share Price Boost

Despite an already strong run, Dave Inc. (NASDAQ:DAVE) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 27% in the last thirty days. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 6.7% isn't as attractive.

Even after such a large jump in price, Dave may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x, since almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 4.6x and even P/S higher than 11x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Has Dave Performed Recently?

Recent times have been quite advantageous for Dave as its revenue has been rising very briskly. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/S ratio. Those who are bullish on Dave will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

How Is Dave's Revenue Growth Trending?

Dave's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 32% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 102% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

When compared to the industry's one-year growth forecast of 15%, the most recent medium-term revenue trajectory is noticeably more alluring

With this in mind, we find it intriguing that Dave's P/S isn't as high compared to that of its industry peers. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Key Takeaway

Dave's recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Our examination of Dave revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't boosting its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. Potential investors that are sceptical over continued revenue performance may be preventing the P/S ratio from matching previous strong performance. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see a lot of volatility.
