Cass Information Systems' (NASDAQ:CASS) Stock Price Has Reduced 24% In The Past Year
Investors can approximate the average market return by buying an index fund. While individual stocks can be big winners, plenty more fail to generate satisfactory returns. Unfortunately the Cass Information Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CASS) share price slid 24% over twelve months. That's disappointing when you consider the market returned 26%. Longer term shareholders haven't suffered as badly, since the stock is down a comparatively less painful 11% in three years.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Unfortunately Cass Information Systems reported an EPS drop of 17% for the last year. This reduction in EPS is not as bad as the 24% share price fall. Unsurprisingly, given the lack of EPS growth, the market seems to be more cautious about the stock.

A Different Perspective
Cass Information Systems shareholders are down 22% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 26%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 4%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend.
