The Returns On Capital At Bentley Systems (NASDAQ:BSY) Don't Inspire Confidence
There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. However, after briefly looking over the numbers, we don't think Bentley Systems (NASDAQ:BSY) has the makings of a multi-bagger going forward, but let's have a look at why that may be.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Bentley Systems:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.094 = US$231m ÷ (US$3.2b - US$720m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2023).
Thus, Bentley Systems has an ROCE of 9.4%. Even though it's in line with the industry average of 9.4%, it's still a low return by itself.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
When we looked at the ROCE trend at Bentley Systems, we didn't gain much confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 26% over the last four years. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
On a related note, Bentley Systems has decreased its current liabilities to 23% of total assets. So we could link some of this to the decrease in ROCE. What's more, this can reduce some aspects of risk to the business because now the company's suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of its operations. Some would claim this reduces the business' efficiency at generating ROCE since it is now funding more of the operations with its own money.
The Bottom Line
Even though returns on capital have fallen in the short term, we find it promising that revenue and capital employed have both increased for Bentley Systems. And the stock has followed suit returning a meaningful 47% to shareholders over the last year. So while the underlying trends could already be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
