Stock Analysis

Blackbaud (NASDAQ:BLKB) adds US$177m to market cap in the past 7 days, though investors from a year ago are still down 14%

It's easy to match the overall market return by buying an index fund. But if you buy individual stocks, you can do both better or worse than that. Unfortunately the Blackbaud, Inc. (NASDAQ:BLKB) share price slid 14% over twelve months. That contrasts poorly with the market return of 12%. On the bright side, the stock is actually up 11% in the last three years. On the other hand the share price has bounced 6.1% over the last week.

While the last year has been tough for Blackbaud shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the last year Blackbaud saw its earnings per share drop below zero. Buyers no doubt think it's a temporary situation, but those with a nose for quality have low tolerance for losses. We hope for shareholders' sake that the company becomes profitable again soon.

A Different Perspective

Blackbaud shareholders are down 14% for the year, but the market itself is up 12%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 2% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for Blackbaud you should be aware of, and 1 of them makes us a bit uncomfortable.
