We're Not Very Worried About Aurora Innovation's (NASDAQ:AUR) Cash Burn Rate
Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. For example, Aurora Innovation (NASDAQ:AUR) shareholders have done very well over the last year, with the share price soaring by 126%. Nonetheless, only a fool would ignore the risk that a loss making company burns through its cash too quickly.
Given its strong share price performance, we think it's worthwhile for Aurora Innovation shareholders to consider whether its cash burn is concerning. In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. Let's start with an examination of the business' cash, relative to its cash burn.
How Long Is Aurora Innovation's Cash Runway?
A company's cash runway is the amount of time it would take to burn through its cash reserves at its current cash burn rate. As at March 2025, Aurora Innovation had cash of US$1.2b and no debt. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through US$637m. That means it had a cash runway of around 22 months as of March 2025. Notably, analysts forecast that Aurora Innovation will break even (at a free cash flow level) in about 4 years. Essentially, that means the company will either reduce its cash burn, or else require more cash. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.

How Is Aurora Innovation's Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
Because Aurora Innovation isn't currently generating revenue, we consider it an early-stage business. Nonetheless, we can still examine its cash burn trajectory as part of our assessment of its cash burn situation. Cash burn was pretty flat over the last year, which suggests that management are holding spending steady while the business advances its strategy. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.
How Easily Can Aurora Innovation Raise Cash?
Since its cash burn is increasing (albeit only slightly), Aurora Innovation shareholders should still be mindful of the possibility it will require more cash in the future. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
Aurora Innovation has a market capitalisation of US$13b and burnt through US$637m last year, which is 4.9% of the company's market value. Given that is a rather small percentage, it would probably be really easy for the company to fund another year's growth by issuing some new shares to investors, or even by taking out a loan.
How Risky Is Aurora Innovation's Cash Burn Situation?
Even though its increasing cash burn makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought Aurora Innovation's cash burn relative to its market cap was relatively promising. One real positive is that analysts are forecasting that the company will reach breakeven. Considering all the factors discussed in this article, we're not overly concerned about the company's cash burn, although we do think shareholders should keep an eye on how it develops. Separately, we looked at different risks affecting the company and spotted 3 warning signs for Aurora Innovation (of which 2 shouldn't be ignored!) you should know about.
