I Built A List Of Growing Companies And Digital Turbine (NASDAQ:APPS) Made The Cut

It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Digital Turbine (NASDAQ:APPS), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is Digital Turbine Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Over the last three years, Digital Turbine has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Digital Turbine has grown its trailing twelve month EPS from US$0.44 to US$0.47, in the last year. That amounts to a small improvement of 6.0%.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. On the one hand, Digital Turbine's EBIT margins fell over the last year, but on the other hand, revenue grew. So it seems the future my hold further growth, especially if EBIT margins can stabilize.

Are Digital Turbine Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like that fresh smell in the air when the rains are coming, insider buying fills me with optimistic anticipation. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

In the last year insider at Digital Turbine were both selling and buying shares; but happily, as a group they spent US$100k more on stock, than they netted from selling it. On balance, that's a good sign. Zooming in, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Chairman of the Board Robert Deutschman for US$475k worth of shares, at about US$31.66 per share.

On top of the insider buying, it's good to see that Digital Turbine insiders have a valuable investment in the business. With a whopping US$81m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. This should keep them focused on creating long term value for shareholders.

While insiders are apparently happy to hold and accumulate shares, that is just part of the pretty picture. The cherry on top is that the CEO, Bill Stone is paid comparatively modestly to CEOs at similar sized companies. For companies with market capitalizations between US$2.0b and US$6.4b, like Digital Turbine, the median CEO pay is around US$6.9m.

The Digital Turbine CEO received total compensation of just US$2.3m in the year to . That looks like modest pay to me, and may hint at a certain respect for the interests of shareholders. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Does Digital Turbine Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

One important encouraging feature of Digital Turbine is that it is growing profits. Better yet, insiders are significant shareholders, and have been buying more shares. That makes the company a prime candidate for my watchlist - and arguably a research priority. What about risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 6 warning signs for Digital Turbine (of which 1 doesn't sit too well with us!) you should know about.

There are plenty of other companies that have insiders buying up shares. So if you like the sound of Digital Turbine, you'll probably love this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying.
