Revenues Working Against Appian Corporation's (NASDAQ:APPN) Share Price

With a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 3.7x Appian Corporation (NASDAQ:APPN) may be sending bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all the Software companies in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 5.4x and even P/S higher than 12x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Appian's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Appian's revenue growth of late has been pretty similar to most other companies. It might be that many expect the mediocre revenue performance to degrade, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think Appian's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

How Is Appian's Revenue Growth Trending?

Appian's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 13%. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 61% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 10% as estimated by the six analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 16% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this information, we can see why Appian is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

What Does Appian's P/S Mean For Investors?

While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

As expected, our analysis of Appian's analyst forecasts confirms that the company's underwhelming revenue outlook is a major contributor to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 2 warning signs for Appian that you need to be mindful of.
