Investors Shouldn't Overlook Autodesk's (NASDAQ:ADSK) Impressive Returns On Capital
If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. With that in mind, the ROCE of Autodesk (NASDAQ:ADSK) looks great, so lets see what the trend can tell us.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Autodesk, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.25 = US$1.4b ÷ (US$11b - US$5.2b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to January 2025).
Therefore, Autodesk has an ROCE of 25%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Software industry average of 9.7%.

So How Is Autodesk's ROCE Trending?
We like the trends that we're seeing from Autodesk. The numbers show that in the last five years, the returns generated on capital employed have grown considerably to 25%. The amount of capital employed has increased too, by 92%. The increasing returns on a growing amount of capital is common amongst multi-baggers and that's why we're impressed.
On a side note, Autodesk's current liabilities are still rather high at 48% of total assets. This can bring about some risks because the company is basically operating with a rather large reliance on its suppliers or other sorts of short-term creditors. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
In Conclusion...
All in all, it's terrific to see that Autodesk is reaping the rewards from prior investments and is growing its capital base. And with a respectable 54% awarded to those who held the stock over the last five years, you could argue that these developments are starting to get the attention they deserve. Therefore, we think it would be worth your time to check if these trends are going to continue.
