Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By SiTime Corporation's (NASDAQ:SITM) 50% Share Price Surge

Those holding SiTime Corporation (NASDAQ:SITM) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 50% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 49% in the last year.

Since its price has surged higher, SiTime's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 20.9x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to other companies in the Semiconductor industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios below 4x and even P/S below 1.9x are quite common. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has SiTime Performed Recently?

SiTime could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. It might be that many expect the dour revenue performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/S from collapsing. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

How Is SiTime's Revenue Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the industry for P/S ratios like SiTime's to be considered reasonable.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 47%. This has erased any of its gains during the last three years, with practically no change in revenue being achieved in total. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 33% per annum as estimated by the five analysts watching the company. With the industry only predicted to deliver 29% per annum, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

With this information, we can see why SiTime is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

What Does SiTime's P/S Mean For Investors?

Shares in SiTime have seen a strong upwards swing lately, which has really helped boost its P/S figure. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

Our look into SiTime shows that its P/S ratio remains high on the merit of its strong future revenues. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
