Some Confidence Is Lacking In Intchains Group Limited (NASDAQ:ICG) As Shares Slide 31%
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Intchains Group Limited (NASDAQ:ICG) shares are down a considerable 31% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 72% loss during that time.
Even after such a large drop in price, Intchains Group's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 24.9x might still make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 18x and even P/E's below 10x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.
While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, Intchains Group's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as Intchains Group's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 18% decrease to the company's bottom line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 96% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the dual analysts covering the company suggest earnings growth is heading into negative territory, declining 5.8% over the next year. Meanwhile, the broader market is forecast to expand by 15%, which paints a poor picture.
With this information, we find it concerning that Intchains Group is trading at a P/E higher than the market. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as these declining earnings are likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Final Word
Intchains Group's P/E hasn't come down all the way after its stock plunged. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Our examination of Intchains Group's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking earnings isn't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. When we see a poor outlook with earnings heading backwards, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
