Pinning Down First Solar, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:FSLR) P/S Is Difficult Right Now
You may think that with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 7.1x First Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:FSLR) is a stock to avoid completely, seeing as almost half of all the Semiconductor companies in the United States have P/S ratios under 3.8x and even P/S lower than 1.6x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does First Solar's Recent Performance Look Like?
First Solar could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to recover significantly, which has kept the P/S ratio from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as First Solar's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 26% last year. As a result, it also grew revenue by 27% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 22% each year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 24% per annum, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we find it concerning that First Solar is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
What We Can Learn From First Solar's P/S?
It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
It comes as a surprise to see First Solar trade at such a high P/S given the revenue forecasts look less than stellar. When we see a weak revenue outlook, we suspect the share price faces a much greater risk of declining, bringing back down the P/S figures. At these price levels, investors should remain cautious, particularly if things don't improve.
