Need To Know: The Consensus Just Cut Its Camtek Ltd. (NASDAQ:CAMT) Estimates For 2023
Market forces rained on the parade of Camtek Ltd. (NASDAQ:CAMT) shareholders today, when the analysts downgraded their forecasts for next year. This report focused on revenue estimates, and it looks as though the consensus view of the business has become substantially more conservative.
Following the latest downgrade, the five analysts covering Camtek provided consensus estimates of US$294m revenue in 2023, which would reflect a discernible 5.9% decline on its sales over the past 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are anticipated to sink 12% to US$1.42 in the same period. Before this latest update, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of US$327m and earnings per share (EPS) of US$1.56 in 2023. Indeed, we can see that analyst sentiment has declined measurably after the new consensus came out, with a substantial drop in revenue estimates and a small dip in EPS estimates to boot.
Our analysis indicates that CAMT is potentially undervalued!
It'll come as no surprise then, to learn that the analysts have cut their price target 11% to US$29.67. Fixating on a single price target can be unwise though, since the consensus target is effectively the average of analyst price targets. As a result, some investors like to look at the range of estimates to see if there are any diverging opinions on the company's valuation. There are some variant perceptions on Camtek, with the most bullish analyst valuing it at US$49.00 and the most bearish at US$22.00 per share. This is a fairly broad spread of estimates, suggesting that the analysts are forecasting a wide range of possible outcomes for the business.
Looking at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can make sense of these forecasts is to see how they measure up against both past performance and industry growth estimates. We would highlight that sales are expected to reverse, with a forecast 4.8% annualised revenue decline to the end of 2023. That is a notable change from historical growth of 24% over the last five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 6.9% annually for the foreseeable future. It's pretty clear that Camtek's revenues are expected to perform substantially worse than the wider industry.
The Bottom Line
The biggest issue in the new estimates is that analysts have reduced their earnings per share estimates, suggesting business headwinds lay ahead for Camtek. Regrettably, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, and the latest forecasts imply the business will grow sales slower than the wider market. The consensus price target fell measurably, with analysts seemingly not reassured by recent business developments, leading to a lower estimate of Camtek's future valuation. Often, one downgrade can set off a daisy-chain of cuts, especially if an industry is in decline. So we wouldn't be surprised if the market became a lot more cautious on Camtek after today.
Still, the long-term prospects of the business are much more relevant than next year's earnings. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for Camtek going out to 2023, and you can see them free on our platform here.
