Uxin Limited's (NASDAQ:UXIN) 30% Cheaper Price Remains In Tune With Revenues
Uxin Limited (NASDAQ:UXIN) shares have retraced a considerable 30% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 66% share price decline.
Even after such a large drop in price, given around half the companies in the United States' Specialty Retail industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.4x, you may still consider Uxin as a stock to avoid entirely with its 3.7x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

What Does Uxin's Recent Performance Look Like?
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Uxin over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/S is high because investors think the company will still do enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be quite nervous about the viability of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as Uxin's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 14%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 70% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Comparing that to the industry, which is only predicted to deliver 3.8% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
In light of this, it's understandable that Uxin's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Presumably shareholders aren't keen to offload something they believe will continue to outmanoeuvre the wider industry.
What We Can Learn From Uxin's P/S?
Even after such a strong price drop, Uxin's P/S still exceeds the industry median significantly. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Uxin revealed its three-year revenue trends are contributing to its high P/S, given they look better than current industry expectations. At this stage investors feel the potential continued revenue growth in the future is great enough to warrant an inflated P/S. Unless the recent medium-term conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
