The Trend Of High Returns At MercadoLibre (NASDAQ:MELI) Has Us Very Interested
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. So when we looked at the ROCE trend of MercadoLibre (NASDAQ:MELI) we really liked what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on MercadoLibre is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.25 = US$2.1b ÷ (US$23b - US$14b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).
Thus, MercadoLibre has an ROCE of 25%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 12% earned by companies in a similar industry.

What Does the ROCE Trend For MercadoLibre Tell Us?
We're delighted to see that MercadoLibre is reaping rewards from its investments and is now generating some pre-tax profits. The company was generating losses five years ago, but now it's earning 25% which is a sight for sore eyes. In addition to that, MercadoLibre is employing 172% more capital than previously which is expected of a company that's trying to break into profitability. This can tell us that the company has plenty of reinvestment opportunities that are able to generate higher returns.
On a side note, we noticed that the improvement in ROCE appears to be partly fueled by an increase in current liabilities. The current liabilities has increased to 63% of total assets, so the business is now more funded by the likes of its suppliers or short-term creditors. And with current liabilities at those levels, that's pretty high.
The Bottom Line On MercadoLibre's ROCE
Overall, MercadoLibre gets a big tick from us thanks in most part to the fact that it is now profitable and is reinvesting in its business. And with the stock having performed exceptionally well over the last five years, these patterns are being accounted for by investors. With that being said, we still think the promising fundamentals mean the company deserves some further due diligence.
