Should You Be Adding MercadoLibre (NASDAQ:MELI) To Your Watchlist Today?
It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.
So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like MercadoLibre (NASDAQ:MELI). While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

MercadoLibre's Improving Profits
In the last three years MercadoLibre's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Impressively, MercadoLibre's EPS catapulted from US$12.29 to US$22.29, over the last year. It's not often a company can achieve year-on-year growth of 81%. The best case scenario? That the business has hit a true inflection point.
Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. The good news is that MercadoLibre is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 3.1 percentage points to 15%, over the last year. Both of which are great metrics to check off for potential growth.

Of course the knack is to find stocks that have their best days in the future, not in the past. You could base your opinion on past performance, of course, but you may also want to check this interactive graph of professional analyst EPS forecasts for MercadoLibre.
Are MercadoLibre Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Owing to the size of MercadoLibre, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a significant proportion of the company. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Given insiders own a significant chunk of shares, currently valued at US$77m, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. That's certainly enough to let shareholders know that management will be very focussed on long term growth.
It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but shareholders may be wondering if remuneration policies are in their best interest. Well, based on the CEO pay, you'd argue that they are indeed. For companies with market capitalisations over US$8.0b, like MercadoLibre, the median CEO pay is around US$13m.
MercadoLibre's CEO took home a total compensation package worth US$9.6m in the year leading up to December 2023. That is actually below the median for CEO's of similarly sized companies. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.
Does MercadoLibre Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
MercadoLibre's earnings have taken off in quite an impressive fashion. The sweetener is that insiders have a mountain of stock, and the CEO remuneration is quite reasonable. The drastic earnings growth indicates the business is going from strength to strength. Hopefully a trend that continues well into the future. MercadoLibre certainly ticks a few boxes, so we think it's probably well worth further consideration. Of course, profit growth is one thing but it's even better if MercadoLibre is receiving high returns on equity, since that should imply it can keep growing without much need for capital. There's always the possibility of doing well buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But for those who consider these important metrics, we encourage you to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a tailored list of companies which have demonstrated growth backed by significant insider holdings.
