Subdued Growth No Barrier To Lands' End, Inc. (NASDAQ:LE) With Shares Advancing 26%
The Lands' End, Inc. (NASDAQ:LE) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 26%. Looking further back, the 20% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, it's still not a stretch to say that Lands' End's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Specialty Retail industry in the United States, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.4x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

What Does Lands' End's Recent Performance Look Like?
Lands' End hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It might be that many expect the dour revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S from falling. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Lands' End would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 5.9% decrease to the company's top line. At least revenue has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 3.3% as estimated by the two analysts watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 5.5%.
With this information, we find it concerning that Lands' End is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the negative growth outlook.
What We Can Learn From Lands' End's P/S?
Lands' End's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
While Lands' End's P/S isn't anything out of the ordinary for companies in the industry, we didn't expect it given forecasts of revenue decline. When we see a gloomy outlook like this, our immediate thoughts are that the share price is at risk of declining, negatively impacting P/S. If the poor revenue outlook tells us one thing, it's that these current price levels could be unsustainable.
And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for Lands' End you should know about.
