Citi Trends, Inc. (NASDAQ:CTRN) Looks Just Right With A 26% Price Jump
Citi Trends, Inc. (NASDAQ:CTRN) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 26% gain in the last month alone. While recent buyers may be laughing, long-term holders might not be as pleased since the recent gain only brings the stock back to where it started a year ago.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Citi Trends' P/S ratio of 0.3x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Specialty Retail industry in the United States is also close to 0.4x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does Citi Trends' Recent Performance Look Like?
Citi Trends' revenue growth of late has been pretty similar to most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to show no drastic signs of changing, justifying the P/S being at current levels. If this is the case, then at least existing shareholders won't be losing sleep over the current share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Citi Trends' to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. This isn't what shareholders were looking for as it means they've been left with a 24% decline in revenue over the last three years in total. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 3.9% per year as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 5.4% each year, which is not materially different.
With this in mind, it makes sense that Citi Trends' P/S is closely matching its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting to see average future growth and are only willing to pay a moderate amount for the stock.
What Does Citi Trends' P/S Mean For Investors?
Citi Trends appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump bringing its P/S back in line with other companies in the industry Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've seen that Citi Trends maintains an adequate P/S seeing as its revenue growth figures match the rest of the industry. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenue won't throw up any surprises. If all things remain constant, the possibility of a drastic share price movement remains fairly remote.
