If You Like EPS Growth Then Check Out Innovative Industrial Properties (NYSE:IIPR) Before It's Too Late
Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Innovative Industrial Properties (NYSE:IIPR), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

How Fast Is Innovative Industrial Properties Growing Its Earnings Per Share?
In the last three years Innovative Industrial Properties's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like a wedge-tailed eagle on the wind, Innovative Industrial Properties's EPS soared from US$3.14 to US$4.38, in just one year. That's a commendable gain of 40%.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that Innovative Industrial Properties is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 6.6 percentage points to 66%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Innovative Industrial Properties Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Since Innovative Industrial Properties has a market capitalization of US$6.4b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Indeed, they have a glittering mountain of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$117m. This suggests to me that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders' interests when making decisions!
It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Innovative Industrial Properties with market caps between US$4.0b and US$12b is about US$6.2m.
The CEO of Innovative Industrial Properties only received US$1.9m in total compensation for the year ending . That's clearly well below average, so at a glance, that arrangement seems generous to shareholders, and points to a modest remuneration culture. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.
Is Innovative Industrial Properties Worth Keeping An Eye On?
You can't deny that Innovative Industrial Properties has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. If that's not enough, consider also that the CEO pay is quite reasonable, and insiders are well-invested alongside other shareholders. Each to their own, but I think all this makes Innovative Industrial Properties look rather interesting indeed. What about risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Innovative Industrial Properties you should know about.
Although Innovative Industrial Properties certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
