Take Care Before Jumping Onto Alset Inc. (NASDAQ:AEI) Even Though It's 28% Cheaper
Alset Inc. (NASDAQ:AEI) shares have retraced a considerable 28% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 31% share price drop.
Following the heavy fall in price, Alset may look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x, considering almost half of all companies in the Real Estate industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2.4x and even P/S higher than 11x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Alset's Recent Performance Look Like?
Recent times have been quite advantageous for Alset as its revenue has been rising very briskly. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to dwindle, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Alset's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an explosive gain to the company's top line. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 44% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of explosive growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 15% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is pretty similar based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Alset's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are more bearish than recent times would indicate and have been accepting lower selling prices.
The Final Word
Having almost fallen off a cliff, Alset's share price has pulled its P/S way down as well. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
The fact that Alset currently trades at a low P/S relative to the industry is unexpected considering its recent three-year growth is in line with the wider industry forecast. When we see industry-like revenue growth but a lower than expected P/S, we assume potential risks are what might be placing downward pressure on the share price. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.
