Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By Organon & Co.'s (NYSE:OGN) 30% Share Price Plunge
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Organon & Co. (NYSE:OGN) shares are down a considerable 30% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 57% share price decline.
After such a large drop in price, given about half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 18x, you may consider Organon as a highly attractive investment with its 3x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Organon over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Organon?
Organon's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 29%. This means it has also seen a slide in earnings over the longer-term as EPS is down 44% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Weighing that medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 13% shows it's an unpleasant look.
With this information, we are not surprised that Organon is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent earnings trends are already weighing down the shares.
What We Can Learn From Organon's P/E?
Having almost fallen off a cliff, Organon's share price has pulled its P/E way down as well. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Organon maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its sliding earnings over the medium-term, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
