Here's Why We're Not Too Worried About Xenon Pharmaceuticals' (NASDAQ:XENE) Cash Burn Situation
There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. But the harsh reality is that very many loss making companies burn through all their cash and go bankrupt.
So should Xenon Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:XENE) shareholders be worried about its cash burn? For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

How Long Is Xenon Pharmaceuticals' Cash Runway?
You can calculate a company's cash runway by dividing the amount of cash it has by the rate at which it is spending that cash. When Xenon Pharmaceuticals last reported its balance sheet in June 2023, it had zero debt and cash worth US$540m. In the last year, its cash burn was US$137m. That means it had a cash runway of about 3.9 years as of June 2023. There's no doubt that this is a reassuringly long runway. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.
How Is Xenon Pharmaceuticals' Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
In our view, Xenon Pharmaceuticals doesn't yet produce significant amounts of operating revenue, since it reported just US$132k in the last twelve months. Therefore, for the purposes of this analysis we'll focus on how the cash burn is tracking. During the last twelve months, its cash burn actually ramped up 89%. While this spending increase is no doubt intended to drive growth, if the trend continues the company's cash runway will shrink very quickly. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.
Can Xenon Pharmaceuticals Raise More Cash Easily?
Given its cash burn trajectory, Xenon Pharmaceuticals shareholders may wish to consider how easily it could raise more cash, despite its solid cash runway. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.
Since it has a market capitalisation of US$2.1b, Xenon Pharmaceuticals' US$137m in cash burn equates to about 6.4% of its market value. Given that is a rather small percentage, it would probably be really easy for the company to fund another year's growth by issuing some new shares to investors, or even by taking out a loan.
So, Should We Worry About Xenon Pharmaceuticals' Cash Burn?
As you can probably tell by now, we're not too worried about Xenon Pharmaceuticals' cash burn. In particular, we think its cash runway stands out as evidence that the company is well on top of its spending.
