Robust Earnings May Not Tell The Whole Story For Tilray Brands (NASDAQ:TLRY)
Despite announcing strong earnings, Tilray Brands, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:TLRY) stock was sluggish. We think that the market might be paying attention to some underlying factors are concerning.

One essential aspect of assessing earnings quality is to look at how much a company is diluting shareholders. In fact, Tilray Brands increased the number of shares on issue by 57% over the last twelve months by issuing new shares. As a result, its net income is now split between a greater number of shares. To celebrate net income while ignoring dilution is like rejoicing because you have a single slice of a larger pizza, but ignoring the fact that the pizza is now cut into many more slices. How Is Dilution Impacting Tilray Brands' Earnings Per Share? (EPS)
Three years ago, Tilray Brands lost money. Zooming in to the last year, we still can't talk about growth rates coherently, since it made a loss last year. What we do know is that while it's great to see a profit over the last twelve months, that profit would have been better, on a per share basis, if the company hadn't needed to issue shares. And so, you can see quite clearly that dilution is having a rather significant impact on shareholders.
In the long term, if Tilray Brands' earnings per share can increase, then the share price should too. However, if its profit increases while its earnings per share stay flat (or even fall) then shareholders might not see much benefit. For the ordinary retail shareholder, EPS is a great measure to check your hypothetical "share" of the company's profit.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
On top of the dilution, we should also consider the US$47m impact of unusual items in the last year, which had the effect of suppressing profit. While deductions due to unusual items are disappointing in the first instance, there is a silver lining. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. Assuming those unusual expenses don't come up again, we'd therefore expect Tilray Brands to produce a higher profit next year, all else being equal.
Our Take On Tilray Brands' Profit Performance
To sum it all up, Tilray Brands took a hit from unusual items which pushed its profit down; without that, it would have made more money. But on the other hand, the company issued more shares, so without buying more shares each shareholder will end up with a smaller part of the profit. Based on these factors, we think it's very unlikely that Tilray Brands' statutory profits make it seem much weaker than it is. So while earnings quality is important, it's equally important to consider the risks facing Tilray Brands at this point in time. For example, we've found that Tilray Brands has 3 warning signs (1 is a bit unpleasant!) that deserve your attention before going any further with your analysis.
