Sotera Health Company's (NASDAQ:SHC) 28% Price Boost Is Out Of Tune With Revenues
Sotera Health Company (NASDAQ:SHC) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 28% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 19% is also fairly reasonable.
Following the firm bounce in price, you could be forgiven for thinking Sotera Health is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 3.5x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' Life Sciences industry have P/S ratios below 2.7x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

How Has Sotera Health Performed Recently?
Sotera Health's revenue growth of late has been pretty similar to most other companies. It might be that many expect the mediocre revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S ratio from falling. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Sotera Health's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 2.8% gain to the company's revenues. The solid recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 16% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been respectable for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 4.7% over the next year. That's shaping up to be similar to the 5.1% growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this information, we find it interesting that Sotera Health is trading at a high P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly average growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
What Does Sotera Health's P/S Mean For Investors?
Sotera Health's P/S is on the rise since its shares have risen strongly. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Seeing as its revenues are forecast to grow in line with the wider industry, it would appear that Sotera Health currently trades on a higher than expected P/S. When we see revenue growth that just matches the industry, we don't expect elevates P/S figures to remain inflated for the long-term. A positive change is needed in order to justify the current price-to-sales ratio.
