Market Participants Recognise Sotera Health Company's (NASDAQ:SHC) Earnings Pushing Shares 29% Higher
Those holding Sotera Health Company (NASDAQ:SHC) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 29% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. But the last month did very little to improve the 62% share price decline over the last year.
Since its price has surged higher, Sotera Health's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 19.3x might make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 14x and even P/E's below 8x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's lofty.
With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Sotera Health has been doing relatively well. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the market for P/E ratios like Sotera Health's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 226% gain to the company's bottom line. Although, its longer-term performance hasn't been as strong with three-year EPS growth being relatively non-existent overall. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 35% over the next year. With the market only predicted to deliver 7.2%, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's understandable that Sotera Health's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
The Final Word
Sotera Health shares have received a push in the right direction, but its P/E is elevated too. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Sotera Health's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
