Does scPharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:SCPH) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?
Warren Buffett famously said, 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. As with many other companies scPharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:SCPH) makes use of debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
When Is Debt A Problem?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Of course, the upside of debt is that it often represents cheap capital, especially when it replaces dilution in a company with the ability to reinvest at high rates of return. When we think about a company's use of debt, we first look at cash and debt together.

What Is scPharmaceuticals's Debt?
As you can see below, scPharmaceuticals had US$19.6m of debt, at September 2021, which is about the same as the year before. You can click the chart for greater detail. However, its balance sheet shows it holds US$84.8m in cash, so it actually has US$65.3m net cash.
A Look At scPharmaceuticals' Liabilities
According to the last reported balance sheet, scPharmaceuticals had liabilities of US$14.2m due within 12 months, and liabilities of US$10.2m due beyond 12 months. On the other hand, it had cash of US$84.8m and US$112.0k worth of receivables due within a year. So it can boast US$60.5m more liquid assets than total liabilities.
This surplus strongly suggests that scPharmaceuticals has a rock-solid balance sheet (and the debt is of no concern whatsoever). On this view, lenders should feel as safe as the beloved of a black-belt karate master. Succinctly put, scPharmaceuticals boasts net cash, so it's fair to say it does not have a heavy debt load! When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if scPharmaceuticals can strengthen its balance sheet over time. So if you want to see what the professionals think, you might find this free report on analyst profit forecasts to be interesting.
It seems likely shareholders hope that scPharmaceuticals can significantly advance the business plan before too long, because it doesn't have any significant revenue at the moment.
So How Risky Is scPharmaceuticals?
By their very nature companies that are losing money are more risky than those with a long history of profitability. And the fact is that over the last twelve months scPharmaceuticals lost money at the earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) line. And over the same period it saw negative free cash outflow of US$29m and booked a US$29m accounting loss. But at least it has US$65.3m on the balance sheet to spend on growth, near-term. Overall, its balance sheet doesn't seem overly risky, at the moment, but we're always cautious until we see the positive free cash flow. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. To that end, you should learn about the 3 warning signs we've spotted with scPharmaceuticals (including 1 which shouldn't be ignored) .
