We're Hopeful That Rocket Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:RCKT) Will Use Its Cash Wisely
Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.
Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether Rocket Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:RCKT) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. Let's start with an examination of the business' cash, relative to its cash burn.

Does Rocket Pharmaceuticals Have A Long Cash Runway?
A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. When Rocket Pharmaceuticals last reported its March 2024 balance sheet in May 2024, it had zero debt and cash worth US$330m. Importantly, its cash burn was US$210m over the trailing twelve months. So it had a cash runway of approximately 19 months from March 2024. Importantly, analysts think that Rocket Pharmaceuticals will reach cashflow breakeven in 3 years. That means unless the company reduces its cash burn quickly, it may well look to raise more cash. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.
How Is Rocket Pharmaceuticals' Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
Because Rocket Pharmaceuticals isn't currently generating revenue, we consider it an early-stage business. Nonetheless, we can still examine its cash burn trajectory as part of our assessment of its cash burn situation. It seems likely that the business is content with its current spending, as the cash burn rate stayed steady over the last twelve months. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.
Can Rocket Pharmaceuticals Raise More Cash Easily?
While its cash burn is only increasing slightly, Rocket Pharmaceuticals shareholders should still consider the potential need for further cash, down the track. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.
Since it has a market capitalisation of US$2.1b, Rocket Pharmaceuticals' US$210m in cash burn equates to about 10% of its market value. Given that situation, it's fair to say the company wouldn't have much trouble raising more cash for growth, but shareholders would be somewhat diluted.
So, Should We Worry About Rocket Pharmaceuticals' Cash Burn?
Even though its increasing cash burn makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought Rocket Pharmaceuticals' cash burn relative to its market cap was relatively promising. One real positive is that analysts are forecasting that the company will reach breakeven. Cash burning companies are always on the riskier side of things, but after considering all of the factors discussed in this short piece, we're not too worried about its rate of cash burn. On another note, we conducted an in-depth investigation of the company, and identified 4 warning signs for Rocket Pharmaceuticals (1 doesn't sit too well with us!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
