Time To Worry? Analysts Just Downgraded Their Prothena Corporation plc (NASDAQ:PRTA) Outlook
The latest analyst coverage could presage a bad day for Prothena Corporation plc (NASDAQ:PRTA), with the analysts making across-the-board cuts to their statutory estimates that might leave shareholders a little shell-shocked. Revenue estimates were cut sharply as the analysts signalled a weaker outlook - perhaps a sign that investors should temper their expectations as well. At US$55.76, shares are up 7.0% in the past 7 days. We'd be curious to see if the downgrade is enough to reverse investor sentiment on the business.
After the downgrade, the consensus from Prothena's ten analysts is for revenues of US$25m in 2023, which would reflect a substantial 53% decline in sales compared to the last year of performance. Losses are supposed to balloon 74% to US$3.87 per share. However, before this estimates update, the consensus had been expecting revenues of US$48m and US$3.73 per share in losses. So there's been quite a change-up of views after the recent consensus updates, with the analysts making a serious cut to their revenue forecasts while also expecting losses per share to increase.

Another way we can view these estimates is in the context of the bigger picture, such as how the forecasts stack up against past performance, and whether forecasts are more or less bullish relative to other companies in the industry. We would highlight that sales are expected to reverse, with a forecast 53% annualised revenue decline to the end of 2023. That is a notable change from historical growth of 59% over the last five years. Compare this with our data, which suggests that other companies in the same industry are, in aggregate, expected to see their revenue grow 15% per year. It's pretty clear that Prothena's revenues are expected to perform substantially worse than the wider industry.
The Bottom Line
The most important thing to take away is that analysts increased their loss per share estimates for this year. Unfortunately analysts also downgraded their revenue estimates, and industry data suggests that Prothena's revenues are expected to grow slower than the wider market. Given the stark change in sentiment, we'd understand if investors became more cautious on Prothena after today.
Even so, the longer term trajectory of the business is much more important for the value creation of shareholders. We have estimates - from multiple Prothena analysts - going out to 2025, and you can see them free on our platform here.
