Pacira BioSciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:PCRX) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 29% share price drop in the last month. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 45% in that time.

Since its price has dipped substantially, Pacira BioSciences' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.4x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the Pharmaceuticals industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 3x and even P/S above 12x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has Pacira BioSciences Performed Recently?

Pacira BioSciences could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Pacira BioSciences?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Pacira BioSciences' to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any revenue growth to speak of for the company over the past year. Although pleasingly revenue has lifted 54% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. So while the company has done a solid job in the past, it's somewhat concerning to see revenue growth decline as much as it has.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 7.9% each year as estimated by the eight analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 20% each year, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this information, we can see why Pacira BioSciences is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From Pacira BioSciences' P/S?

The southerly movements of Pacira BioSciences' shares means its P/S is now sitting at a pretty low level. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of Pacira BioSciences' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
