Further Upside For OptiNose, Inc. (NASDAQ:OPTN) Shares Could Introduce Price Risks After 56% Bounce
The OptiNose, Inc. (NASDAQ:OPTN) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 56%. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 63% share price drop in the last twelve months.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, OptiNose may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.2x, considering almost half of all companies in the Pharmaceuticals industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2.9x and even P/S higher than 11x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How OptiNose Has Been Performing
Recent times haven't been great for OptiNose as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting the current trend of poor revenue growth to continue, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

OptiNose's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 5.1% gain to the company's revenues. The solid recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 10% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has actually done a good job of growing revenue over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 22% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 18% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that OptiNose's P/S sits behind most of its industry peers. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.
The Bottom Line On OptiNose's P/S
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift OptiNose's P/S close to the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
OptiNose's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't contributing to its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. The reason for this depressed P/S could potentially be found in the risks the market is pricing in. It appears the market could be anticipating revenue instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
