We're Not Very Worried About Ikena Oncology's (NASDAQ:IKNA) Cash Burn Rate

Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. Nonetheless, only a fool would ignore the risk that a loss making company burns through its cash too quickly.

So, the natural question for Ikena Oncology (NASDAQ:IKNA) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). Let's start with an examination of the business' cash, relative to its cash burn.

When Might Ikena Oncology Run Out Of Money?

A company's cash runway is the amount of time it would take to burn through its cash reserves at its current cash burn rate. In June 2021, Ikena Oncology had US$264m in cash, and was debt-free. Importantly, its cash burn was US$51m over the trailing twelve months. So it had a cash runway of about 5.2 years from June 2021. Even though this is but one measure of the company's cash burn, the thought of such a long cash runway warms our bellies in a comforting way. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.

How Well Is Ikena Oncology Growing?

One thing for shareholders to keep front in mind is that Ikena Oncology increased its cash burn by 707% in the last twelve months. While that's concerning on it's own, the fact that operating revenue was actually down 17% over the same period makes us positively tremulous. In light of the above-mentioned, we're pretty wary of the trajectory the company seems to be on. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.

How Easily Can Ikena Oncology Raise Cash?

While Ikena Oncology seems to be in a fairly good position, it's still worth considering how easily it could raise more cash, even just to fuel faster growth. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).

Ikena Oncology has a market capitalisation of US$426m and burnt through US$51m last year, which is 12% of the company's market value. Given that situation, it's fair to say the company wouldn't have much trouble raising more cash for growth, but shareholders would be somewhat diluted.

So, Should We Worry About Ikena Oncology's Cash Burn?

On this analysis of Ikena Oncology's cash burn, we think its cash runway was reassuring, while its increasing cash burn has us a bit worried. While we're the kind of investors who are always a bit concerned about the risks involved with cash burning companies, the metrics we have discussed in this article leave us relatively comfortable about Ikena Oncology's situation. Separately, we looked at different risks affecting the company and spotted 2 warning signs for Ikena Oncology (of which 1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) you should know about.
