Here's Why ICON (NASDAQ:ICLR) Has Caught The Eye Of Investors

Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like ICON (NASDAQ:ICLR), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

ICON's Earnings Per Share Are Growing

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price should eventually follow. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. We can see that in the last three years ICON grew its EPS by 7.8% per year. While that sort of growth rate isn't anything to write home about, it does show the business is growing.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. While we note ICON achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 5.4% to US$8.3b. That's encouraging news for the company!

Are ICON Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$25b company like ICON. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$163m. This comes in at 0.7% of shares in the company, which is a fair amount of a business of this size. So despite their percentage holding being low, company management still have plenty of reasons to deliver the best outcomes for investors.

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to ICON, with market caps over US$8.0b, is around US$13m.

ICON's CEO took home a total compensation package worth US$7.2m in the year leading up to December 2023. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies and seems pretty reasonable. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.

Should You Add ICON To Your Watchlist?

One positive for ICON is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. The fact that EPS is growing is a genuine positive for ICON, but the pleasant picture gets better than that. With company insiders aligning themselves considerably with the company's success and modest CEO compensation, there's no arguments that this is a stock worth looking into. While we've looked at the quality of the earnings, we haven't yet done any work to value the stock. So if you like to buy cheap, you may want to check if ICON is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
