Further Upside For Harvard Bioscience, Inc. (NASDAQ:HBIO) Shares Could Introduce Price Risks After 27% Bounce

Harvard Bioscience, Inc. (NASDAQ:HBIO) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 27% gain in the last month alone. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 68% share price drop in the last twelve months.

Even after such a large jump in price, Harvard Bioscience's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Life Sciences industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 3.5x and even P/S above 7x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Has Harvard Bioscience Performed Recently?

Harvard Bioscience could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Harvard Bioscience's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Harvard Bioscience would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 11%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 26% in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the two analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 3.6% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 5.5%, which is not materially different.

With this information, we find it odd that Harvard Bioscience is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On Harvard Bioscience's P/S

Even after such a strong price move, Harvard Bioscience's P/S still trails the rest of the industry. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

It looks to us like the P/S figures for Harvard Bioscience remain low despite growth that is expected to be in line with other companies in the industry. Despite average revenue growth estimates, there could be some unobserved threats keeping the P/S low. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.
