Read This Before Buying Galectin Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:GALT) Shares
It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So before you buy or sell Galectin Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:GALT), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.
Do Insider Transactions Matter?
Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.
Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year'.

Galectin Therapeutics Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Independent Director, Gilbert Amelio, for US$130k worth of shares, at about US$2.17 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$2.26, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. We note that the biggest single sale was only 50% of Gilbert Amelio's holding. The only individual insider seller over the last year was Gilbert Amelio.
Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 21.00k shares worth US$48k. On the other hand they divested 60.00k shares, for US$130k. Galectin Therapeutics Insiders Are Selling The Stock
The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of Galectin Therapeutics shares. Specifically, Independent Director Gilbert Amelio ditched US$130k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. In light of this it's hard to argue that all the insiders think that the shares are a bargain.
Insider Ownership of Galectin Therapeutics
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Insiders own 17% of Galectin Therapeutics shares, worth about US$22m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
So What Do The Galectin Therapeutics Insider Transactions Indicate?
An insider sold Galectin Therapeutics shares recently, but they didn't buy any. And our longer term analysis of insider transactions didn't bring confidence, either. While insiders do own shares, they don't own a heap, and they have been selling. So we'd only buy after careful consideration.
