As every investor would know, not every swing hits the sweet spot. But really big losses can really drag down an overall portfolio. So consider, for a moment, the misfortune of Denali Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ:DNLI) investors who have held the stock for three years as it declined a whopping 71%. That would be a disturbing experience. And the ride hasn't got any smoother in recent times over the last year, with the price 27% lower in that time. And the share price decline continued over the last week, dropping some 7.3%.

If the past week is anything to go by, investor sentiment for Denali Therapeutics isn't positive, so let's see if there's a mismatch between fundamentals and the share price.

Denali Therapeutics wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In the last three years, Denali Therapeutics saw its revenue grow by 4.6% per year, compound. Given it's losing money in pursuit of growth, we are not really impressed with that. Nonetheless, it's fair to say the rapidly declining share price (down 20%, compound, over three years) suggests the market is very disappointed with this level of growth. While we're definitely wary of the stock, after that kind of performance, it could be an over-reaction. Before considering a purchase, take a look at the losses the company is racking up.

A Different Perspective

Denali Therapeutics shareholders are down 27% for the year, but the market itself is up 26%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 1.0% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
