There's No Escaping Atlantic International Corp.'s (NASDAQ:ATLN) Muted Revenues Despite A 28% Share Price Rise

The Atlantic International Corp. (NASDAQ:ATLN) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 28%. While recent buyers may be laughing, long-term holders might not be as pleased since the recent gain only brings the stock back to where it started a year ago.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Atlantic International's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.8x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Life Sciences industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 3.6x and even P/S above 7x are quite common. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Atlantic International's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

The recent revenue growth at Atlantic International would have to be considered satisfactory if not spectacular. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to degrade, which has repressed the P/S. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders may have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

Atlantic International's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 5.5% gain to the company's revenues. Although, the latest three year period in total hasn't been as good as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 4.8% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this in consideration, it's easy to understand why Atlantic International's P/S falls short of the mark set by its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Key Takeaway

Shares in Atlantic International have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

In line with expectations, Atlantic International maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider industry forecast. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price experience a reversal of fortunes anytime soon.
