Atlantic International Corp.'s (NASDAQ:ATLN) Share Price Boosted 62% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too
Atlantic International Corp. (NASDAQ:ATLN) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 62% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Longer-term shareholders would be thankful for the recovery in the share price since it's now virtually flat for the year after the recent bounce.
Even after such a large jump in price, Atlantic International may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x, considering almost half of all companies in the Life Sciences industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2.9x and even P/S higher than 6x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Has Atlantic International Performed Recently?
Atlantic International has been doing a decent job lately as it's been growing revenue at a reasonable pace. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to degrade, which has repressed the P/S. Those who are bullish on Atlantic International will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Atlantic International would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 5.5%. Although, the latest three year period in total hasn't been as good as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 3.4% shows it's noticeably less attractive.
With this information, we can see why Atlantic International is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Atlantic International's P/S
Even after such a strong price move, Atlantic International's P/S still trails the rest of the industry. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
In line with expectations, Atlantic International maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider industry forecast. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price experience a reversal of fortunes anytime soon.
