Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Yelp (NYSE:YELP). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide Yelp with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

How Fast Is Yelp Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Yelp has undergone a massive growth in earnings per share over the last three years. So much so that this three year growth rate wouldn't be a fair assessment of the company's future. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. In impressive fashion, Yelp's EPS grew from US$0.55 to US$1.34, over the previous 12 months. Year on year growth of 144% is certainly a sight to behold.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Yelp shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 3.9% to 7.8%, and revenue is growing. Both of which are great metrics to check off for potential growth.

Are Yelp Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It should give investors a sense of security owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, creating a close alignment their interests. So it is good to see that Yelp insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$163m. Holders should find this level of insider commitment quite encouraging, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience their success, or failure, with the stock.

Should You Add Yelp To Your Watchlist?

This level of EPS growth does wonders for attracting investment, and the large insider investment in the company is just the cherry on top.
