TuanChe Limited (NASDAQ:TC) Shares Fly 38% But Investors Aren't Buying For Growth
Those holding TuanChe Limited (NASDAQ:TC) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 38% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 64% share price drop in the last twelve months.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, TuanChe's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Media industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 0.7x and even P/S above 3x are quite common. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does TuanChe's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
For instance, TuanChe's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. Perhaps the market believes the recent revenue performance isn't good enough to keep up the industry, causing the P/S ratio to suffer. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, TuanChe would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 45%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 79% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 4.2% shows it's an unpleasant look.
In light of this, it's understandable that TuanChe's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.
The Final Word
TuanChe's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
It's no surprise that TuanChe maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
