LiveOne, Inc. (NASDAQ:LVO) Looks Inexpensive After Falling 29% But Perhaps Not Attractive Enough

The LiveOne, Inc. (NASDAQ:LVO) share price has softened a substantial 29% over the previous 30 days, handing back much of the gains the stock has made lately. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 46% share price drop.

Following the heavy fall in price, LiveOne may be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.6x, considering almost half of all companies in the Entertainment industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.4x and even P/S higher than 5x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

How LiveOne Has Been Performing

Recent times haven't been great for LiveOne as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting the current trend of poor revenue growth to continue, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like LiveOne's to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 11%. The latest three year period has also seen a 9.9% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been respectable for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 4.6% over the next year. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 13%.

In light of this, it's understandable that LiveOne's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What Does LiveOne's P/S Mean For Investors?

LiveOne's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of LiveOne's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue is contributing to its low P/S. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, LiveOne's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
