Advantage Solutions (NASDAQ:ADV) shareholders are up 5.1% this past week, but still in the red over the last five years
Statistically speaking, long term investing is a profitable endeavour. But no-one is immune from buying too high. Zooming in on an example, the Advantage Solutions Inc. (NASDAQ:ADV) share price dropped 68% in the last half decade. We certainly feel for shareholders who bought near the top. Furthermore, it's down 13% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.
While the last five years has been tough for Advantage Solutions shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

Advantage Solutions wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think Advantage Solutions will earn in the future (free profit forecasts).
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Advantage Solutions shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 60% over the last year. That certainly beats the loss of about 11% per year over the last half decade. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with Advantage Solutions , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
