Stock Analysis

Silgan Holdings' (NYSE:SLGN) five-year total shareholder returns outpace the underlying earnings growth

When you buy and hold a stock for the long term, you definitely want it to provide a positive return. Better yet, you'd like to see the share price move up more than the market average. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the Silgan Holdings Inc. (NYSE:SLGN) share price is up 57% in the last five years, that's less than the market return. Zooming in, the stock is up just 3.8% in the last year.

While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Over half a decade, Silgan Holdings managed to grow its earnings per share at 8.2% a year. So the EPS growth rate is rather close to the annualized share price gain of 9% per year. This indicates that investor sentiment towards the company has not changed a great deal. In fact, the share price seems to largely reflect the EPS growth.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Silgan Holdings' TSR for the last 5 years was 69%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Silgan Holdings shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 5.4% over one year. Of course, that includes the dividend. However, that falls short of the 11% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. The pessimistic view would be that be that the stock has its best days behind it, but on the other hand the price might simply be moderating while the business itself continues to execute. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Silgan Holdings better, we need to consider many other factors. Case in point: We've spotted 3 warning signs for Silgan Holdings you should be aware of, and 1 of them is a bit unpleasant.
