Some The Sherwin-Williams Company (NYSE:SHW) shareholders may be a little concerned to see that the President & GM of Global Supply Chain Division and Consumer Brands Group, Colin Davie, recently sold a substantial US$1.0m worth of stock at a price of US$360 per share. That sale reduced their total holding by 32% which is hardly insignificant, but far from the worst we've seen.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Sherwin-Williams

In fact, the recent sale by Colin Davie was the biggest sale of Sherwin-Williams shares made by an insider individual in the last twelve months, according to our records. That means that even when the share price was slightly below the current price of US$362, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. It is worth noting that this sale was only 32% of Colin Davie's holding.

Insider Ownership Of Sherwin-Williams

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Sherwin-Williams insiders own about US$279m worth of shares (which is 0.3% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
