PPG Industries' (NYSE:PPG) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's
The board of PPG Industries, Inc. (NYSE:PPG) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend by 4.8% on the 12th of September to $0.65, up from last year's comparable payment of $0.62. Even though the dividend went up, the yield is still quite low at only 1.7%.

PPG Industries' Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
If it is predictable over a long period, even low dividend yields can be attractive. Prior to this announcement, PPG Industries' dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 56.0%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 31% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
PPG Industries Has A Solid Track Record
Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. The annual payment during the last 10 years was $1.18 in 2013, and the most recent fiscal year payment was $2.48. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 7.7% per annum over that time. The growth of the dividend has been pretty reliable, so we think this can offer investors some nice additional income in their portfolio.
PPG Industries May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend
The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. Earnings has been rising at 2.6% per annum over the last five years, which admittedly is a bit slow. Growth of 2.6% may indicate that the company has limited investment opportunity so it is returning its earnings to shareholders instead. This could mean the dividend doesn't have the growth potential we look for going into the future.
PPG Industries Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that PPG Industries is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. The company is easily earning enough to cover its dividend payments and it is great to see that these earnings are being translated into cash flow. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
