The analysts covering Myers Industries, Inc. (NYSE:MYE) delivered a dose of negativity to shareholders today, by making a substantial revision to their statutory forecasts for next year. Both revenue and earnings per share (EPS) estimates were cut sharply as the analysts factored in the latest outlook for the business, concluding that they were too optimistic previously.

Following the latest downgrade, the current consensus, from the two analysts covering Myers Industries, is for revenues of US$810m in 2024, which would reflect a measurable 6.4% reduction in Myers Industries' sales over the past 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are anticipated to fall 17% to US$1.14 in the same period. Prior to this update, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of US$903m and earnings per share (EPS) of US$1.79 in 2024. It looks like analyst sentiment has declined substantially, with a measurable cut to revenue estimates and a large cut to earnings per share numbers as well.

These estimates are interesting, but it can be useful to paint some more broad strokes when seeing how forecasts compare, both to the Myers Industries' past performance and to peers in the same industry. These estimates imply that sales are expected to slow, with a forecast annualised revenue decline of 5.2% by the end of 2024. This indicates a significant reduction from annual growth of 13% over the last five years. Compare this with our data, which suggests that other companies in the same industry are, in aggregate, expected to see their revenue grow 2.4% per year. It's pretty clear that Myers Industries' revenues are expected to perform substantially worse than the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that analysts cut their earnings per share estimates, expecting a clear decline in business conditions. Unfortunately analysts also downgraded their revenue estimates, and industry data suggests that Myers Industries' revenues are expected to grow slower than the wider market. After a cut like that, investors could be forgiven for thinking analysts are a lot more bearish on Myers Industries, and a few readers might choose to steer clear of the stock.

Still, the long-term prospects of the business are much more relevant than next year's earnings. We have analyst estimates for Myers Industries going out as far as 2025, and you can see them free on our platform here.
