The Mosaic Company's (NYSE:MOS) Share Price Is Matching Sentiment Around Its Revenues
The Mosaic Company's (NYSE:MOS) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x may look like a pretty appealing investment opportunity when you consider close to half the companies in the Chemicals industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.4x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has Mosaic Performed Recently?
Mosaic has been struggling lately as its revenue has declined faster than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the dismal revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S. You'd much rather the company improve its revenue performance if you still believe in the business. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the revenue slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.
Keen to find out how analysts think Mosaic's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start. What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Mosaic's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 28%. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 23% overall rise in revenue. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 1.3% per year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 6.7% per annum, which paints a poor picture.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Mosaic's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Bottom Line On Mosaic's P/S
Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
As we suspected, our examination of Mosaic's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue is contributing to its low P/S. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Mosaic's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
