Quaker Chemical Corporation's (NYSE:KWR) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to $0.455 on 31st of October. This takes the annual payment to 1.2% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

Quaker Chemical Is Paying Out More Than It Is Earning

The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. Prior to this announcement, the company was paying out 364% of what it was earning, however the dividend was quite comfortably covered by free cash flows at a cash payout ratio of only 24%. Generally, we think cash is more important than accounting measures of profit, so with the cash flows easily covering the dividend, we don't think there is much reason to worry.

Earnings per share is forecast to rise by 93.1% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could get very high, which probably can't continue without starting to put some pressure on the balance sheet.

Quaker Chemical Has A Solid Track Record

The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. Since 2013, the annual payment back then was $0.98, compared to the most recent full-year payment of $1.82. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 6.4% a year over that time. Dividends have grown at a reasonable rate over this period, and without any major cuts in the payment over time, we think this is an attractive combination as it provides a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky

Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Unfortunately things aren't as good as they seem. Quaker Chemical's earnings per share has shrunk at 28% a year over the past five years. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.

Our Thoughts On Quaker Chemical's Dividend

In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Quaker Chemical's payments are rock solid. The company is generating plenty of cash, but we still think the dividend is a bit high for comfort. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. To that end, Quaker Chemical has 3 warning signs (and 1 which is concerning) we think you should know about. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
